A special day of wellbeing and giving back to Carers who look after their families or loved ones!

Caring for others is a profound and selfless act, yet it often comes at the expense of the carer’s own well-being. They dedicate their time, energy and emotions to support loved ones, patients, or clients, often neglecting their own self-care in the process. This imbalance can lead to burnout, stress and financial strain, making it essential for carers to prioritise their own well-being.

With this in mind, I attended a Dragons Den style funded pitch at the Innovation in Mental Health & Wellbeing event in September 2024. The event is part of the Boosting Life Sciences Social Economy programme and was held in The Invention Rooms in Wood Lane, London, W12.

Forming a group and being called to give our presentation, we gathered upfront to pitch our idea based on supporting Carers. It was screened by a panel of experienced judges representing Islington Council, Hammersmith & Fulham Council, and event promotion by Digipac Consultancy.

It was nerve wracking yet being chosen as one of the two winning teams left us elated. I had no idea that this was the beginning to our entrepreneurial group journey. Our decision to progress this Care project led to our winning idea 'Self-care For Carers' being a live soft launch event on Friday 21 February 2025.

Our Self-care For Carers wellbeing team consists of:

  1. Debbie Best, a Carer and 'Self-care for Carers' project inspiration

  2. Suzanne Noble of Startup School for Seniors, and a Carer

  3. Valerie Lothian of Focusivity | Financial Stress Relief

  4. Liza Patoux of Elizian Days, Yoga & Relaxation

  5. Jennifer Huddleston of Splitting Light, Art Playshop

The venue and lunch provision on the day was hosted by Lulu Gywnne of Awaken London.

Why Self-Care Matters for Carers of All Professions

Many carers experience high levels of stress due to financial concerns, emotional fatigue, and lack of support. Studies show that nearly 60% of unpaid carers experience financial hardship, with many struggling to meet their basic needs. Additionally, the mental health impact of caregiving is significant, with over 70% of carers reporting anxiety and stress-related symptoms.

At Focusivity, we agree and recognise the pressures faced by carers, and provide practical solutions to help them regain balance and build resilience. Our Financial Stress Relief Service is designed to equip carers with the necessary communication skills, and financial stress management awareness/ control techniques to improve their quality of life.

Key challenges Carers face include:

  • Financial strain due to reduced work hours or leaving jobs altogether

  • Emotional exhaustion from constant care-giving responsibilities

  • Lack of time for self-care, leading to physical and mental burnout

  • Poor communication skills, making it harder to express their needs and seek help
